A Conversation About Talking to a Flight Attendant

Sharing is caring!

Emma: Hey, Jake! How was your flight back from New York?

Jake: Oh, it was good! A little long, but no delays, so I can’t complain.

Emma: Nice! Did you get a window seat this time?

Jake: Nah, I was in the aisle. It’s easier if I need to get up, you know?

Emma: Yeah, that makes sense. Did you talk to any of the flight attendants?

Jake: Actually, yeah! I had a funny conversation with one of them.

Emma: Really? What happened?

Jake: Well, I was trying to put my bag in the overhead bin, but it was kind of stuck. The flight attendant saw me struggling and came over to help.

Emma: Oh no, that’s embarrassing. What did she say?

Jake: She was really nice about it! She said, “Need a hand with that?”

Emma: Haha, at least she didn’t just watch you struggle.

Jake: Right? So I said, “Yeah, thanks! It’s heavier than I thought.”

Emma: Did she help you lift it?

Jake: Yeah, she just pushed it in real quick and said, “There you go! All set.”

Emma: That’s nice. Flight attendants are usually so helpful.

Jake: Totally. Then later, she came by with the drink cart and asked, “Would you like anything to drink?”

Emma: What did you get?

Jake: Just water. I asked, “Can I have some water, please?”

Emma: Simple and polite.

Jake: Exactly. Then she handed me the little cup and said, “Here you go!”

Emma: Did you ask for ice?

Jake: Oh yeah! I forgot—I said, “Actually, could I get some ice with that?”

Emma: And she got it for you?

Jake: Yep! She said, “Sure, no problem.”

Emma: Nice. I always feel bad asking for extra stuff, but they’re usually cool about it.

Jake: Yeah, as long as you’re polite. Later, I asked her, “Excuse me, how much longer until we land?”

Emma: What did she say?

Jake: She checked and said, “About an hour and a half. We’ll be serving snacks soon.”

Emma: Oh, did you get a snack?

Jake: Yeah! They had those little pretzels. She asked, “Would you like pretzels or cookies?”

Emma: Which one did you pick?

Jake: Pretzels. I said, “Pretzels, please.”

Emma: Classic choice.

Jake: Haha, yeah. Then later, I had to use the restroom, so I asked her, “Is it okay to use the lavatory now?”

Emma: Was the seatbelt sign on?

Jake: No, but there was a bit of turbulence, so I wanted to check.

Emma: Smart. What did she say?

Jake: She said, “Yes, but please hold onto the handrails just in case.”

Emma: Good advice.

Jake: Yeah, safety first! Oh, and then at the end, when we were landing, she said, “Make sure your seatbelt is fastened and your tray table is up.”

Emma: Standard procedure.

Jake: Right. And when we were getting off, I said, “Thanks for your help!”

Emma: Aw, that’s nice. Did she respond?

Jake: Yeah! She smiled and said, “You’re welcome! Have a great day!”

Emma: Aww, that’s sweet.

Jake: Yeah, it was a good flight. Everyone was really friendly.

Emma: That’s awesome. I always get nervous talking to flight attendants.

Jake: Really? Why?

Emma: I don’t know, I feel like I’ll say the wrong thing.

Jake: Nah, just be polite and say “please” and “thank you.” They deal with way worse passengers, trust me.

Emma: Haha, true. Maybe I’ll try talking to them more next time.

Jake: You should! It’s not a big deal.

Emma: Did you hear any funny announcements from the pilot or crew?

Jake: Oh yeah! The pilot came on and said, “Ladies and gentlemen, we’ll be landing shortly. The weather is nice and sunny—just how we like it!”

Emma: Haha, that’s cute.

Jake: Yeah, it was a nice touch.

Emma: Well, sounds like you had a smooth trip.

Jake: Yeah, no complaints. Next time, we should fly together!

Emma: Definitely! Then I won’t be nervous talking to the flight attendants.

Jake: Exactly! I’ll do all the talking if you want.

Emma: Deal.

Jake: Cool. Hey, want to grab lunch?

Emma: Sure! Let’s go.
